Superb headphones enhanced further by purchase of upgrade to Sony’s braided copper cable at £231.00 from amazon which boosted performance markedly. Dynamic sound with my sennheiser hdv820 headphone amp and really beautiful sound with hi-res audio streaming service. Can listen for long periods without ringing ears or tiring of sound. Has scale and punch to give thrilling sound.

I spent a long time debating whether i could justify spending so much on headphones ? ( I’d previously debated buying Sony’s flagship headphone amp – TA-Z1HES, but i finally did & in no way regret that purchase. )So i finally took the plunge & purchased the Sony MDR-Z1R’s & WOW !!!!! I’ve NEVER heard headphones like these. Totally unique sound. Hearing details in music i’ve listened to for 40 + years, that i was never aware of.Don’t regret buying at all. Infact, i’d say without doubt the best purchase i’ve EVER made ! Something that will give daily pleasure, for the rest of my days. Don’t “sit on the fence”, just buy them !!!

While these are the most expensive headphones I’ve ever bought I’ve had several pairs around the thousand pound mark, from the likes of Grado, Stax and B&W. For me, these beat the lot. I was able to compare them against my B&W P9 Signatures and realised how even those great cans had more colouration than I wanted. Some folk may want the bass boosted, sometimes me included, or so I thought, but once my ears had stopped being greedy I realised that these fellahs are the way forward. No fatigue, really comfortable, great at avoiding overspill into the room and angelic in quality. Yes they’re pricey. Yes they’re worth it.

the z1r is often compared to sehnheiser hd 800s – a veteran “reference” headset.the sehnheiser set has some problematic specifications.1. impedance 300 ohm. they somehow convince consumers that this crazy impedance is a sign of nobility. the opposite is true – it is a sign of inferior engineering.2. the senheiser is open strucure. this is portrayed as an advantage. I have used both open structure and closed structure. open structure is a downside. it makes the listener more vulnerable to outside distractions.3. the sony driver is 70mm the sehnheiser driver is 56mm. inevitably the sony must have a superior bass response,4. one more point about audiophile myths. you dont need any run in period for your headset. same is true about amplifiers, speakers etc.

I’ve had LCD-i4, LCD-MX4’s, Abyss Diana, Shure KSE and a plethora of other high end earphones and these are by far the best value for the money I’ve ever heard. I listen to a mix of goa/psytrance and vocal jazz (oddly) and it handles both genres with ease. Highly recommended.

Incredible sound. I can hear my musics the way I wasn’t able before. I can hear instruments, voices, record noises I never know was there. I’m talking about music tracks I know for more than 20 years. Amazing.

Sony really nailed it. The comfort ..the sound…the SOUND…THE SOUND!! Simply a delicious aural experience in every way. Actually enhances every bit of music that passes through them. They are expensive but everything of quality is on this planet. A rare and beautiful thing.

Earcups are just too big and bulky, love the sound but I couldn’t relax in my recliner chair to enjoy because the cups won’t let me to tilt my head, they stick out too far. Had to return them. Please Sony make them a bit smaller.

An excellent pair of all-rounder headphone, slightly darker than I thought, but I will point out that if you have a larger than average ear like I do, there is a significant chance that the outer contour of your ears will be slightly touching the plastic grill inside the headphone.

Don’t trust every reviews on the internet. Hear it yourself. This is the best closed headphone I hear so far. Hear every single details and very musical. Extremely comfortable. You can ware it for hours. I have not tried the balanced cable yet but the standard cable is amazing already.y

These are not value for money..i had previously been using a pair of Audio Technica headphones costing considerably less and the Sony ‘phones sounded the same,no difference at all..very disappointed in the Sony headphones,i would not recommend these at all..

very poor audio reproduction quality, very uncomfortable, overheats earsI had been a Sony-phile my whole life ever since I got my first Sony headphones which were extremely comfortable and had great audio reproduction quality. I’ve had 1 or 2 other Sony headphones since then which again had great audio reproduction quality. But these headphones sound worse than any other headphones that I have ever used over the course of my entire life (including the cheap headphones that I used back in the 1980s). These headphones are probably worth $100 to $200. I will never buy Sony headphones again after buying these. I regret my purchase. I basically paid more than $1900 for a lavish box to store these headphones in 🙁

I am a big fan of Sony products. I’ve owned Sony XBR TVs for years, plus I have two other very good Sony headphones, a Sony NW-WM1A Walkman, and a TA-ZH1ES headphone amplifier. So, I expected to be pleased with the Z1R. It has had mixed professional reviews, including a critical review from InnerFidelity. It turns out, the InnerFidelity review is exactly right. The Z1R has a bit too much bass, although that didn’t bother me much. What I could not accept was the treble peak that made orchestral strings sound unnatural. I listen mainly to jazz and classical music, and orchestral music just sounds wrong on the Z1R. Amazingly, Sony has a much better headphone, the MDR-1AM2, which is more natural sounding, with only a small emphasis in the bass and treble. So, if you are looking at the Z1R, consider the much less expensive MDR-1AM2. Or, in the $2,000 price range, a much better headphone is the Ether 2 from MrSpeakers (now Dan Clark Audio).

A few negative reviews almost robbed me of the opportunity of a lifetime. The Sony MDR-Z1R deserves applause when it comes to closed headphone performance. Its soundstage and dynamics rival any well regarded High-End Audio system. I have heard lots of mega-buck systems over the years and the Sony MDR Z1 is remarkable.Long break-in is its only weakness and if you judge it based on a few days of listening, will its your loss. The Sony engineers and artisans have created a gem. Pay attention to your amp and DAC to get the best performance and you will be well rewarded with a remarkably well designed product.
